New Malware Is Using CSV Files To Infect Users

Researchers have spotted a new phishing campaign you should be aware of.

What sets this one apart is that the hackers are using a lowly but specially crafted CSV file to infect machines. They are installing the BazarBackdoor malware. If you're not familiar with the term CSV stands for "Comma Separated Values" and it's a text file format that can be loaded into Excel.

If you open the file in a text editor, you'll simply see alphanumeric values separated by commas with the first line generally being the headers for the spreadsheet. Open the same file in Excel and it will separate the data into neat rows and columns.

CSV files are popular because they make it relatively easy to export data from one application and import it into another. Since the files are text only most people consider them to be relatively harmless and are generally not all that cautious when opening them.

Microsoft Excel supports a feature called Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) which can be used to execute commands whose output is inputted into the open spreadsheet including CSV files.

Hackers are always on the lookout for new angles to play and have naturally begun to abuse this feature. They execute commands that download malware on the devices of unsuspecting victims.

BazarBackdoor is a stealthy malware strain created by the TrickBot group. Its main purpose as the name suggests is to provide ongoing remote access to an internal device that can be used as a springboard for further lateral movement within a network.

The current campaign is centered around emails that pretend to be "Payment Remittance Advice" emails with links to remote sites that download a CSV file with innocuous names like "document-2196t6.csv."

If this file is opened in notepad or word pad and examined, at first glance it will appear to be nothing more than a run of the mill CSV file. Unfortunately, embedded inside of it is a WMIC call in one of the columns of data that launches a PowerShell command and that's enough. That's all the hackers need to install the malware.

As always vigilance is your best defense against cyberattacks. Remind your employees not to open any emails from unknown or untrusted sources and not to download or open any attachments from those emails.

Call SpartanTec, Inc. now if you want to protect your business against malware, phishing, and other online threats.

Last Year Microsoft Blocked More Than 25 Billion Hacker Attacks

Individual users often don't have a good sense of the scope and scale of hacker attacks around the world.  The numbers may shock you.

According to Microsoft, in 2021 the company blocked more than 25.6 billion brute force authentication attacks against Azure AD users. They also and intercepted a staggering 35.7 billion phishing emails with Microsoft Defender for Office 365.

Vasu Jakkal is Microsoft's Corporate Vice President for Security, Compliance, and Identity. Jakkal is both passionate and concerned about this subject.  The increase in the total number of attempts since the pandemic began has been breathtaking.

Unfortunately, Jakkal says that so far only a minority of Azure AD and Microsoft 365 users seem interested in taking steps to bolster their own security. Based on statistics gathered by Microsoft, only 22 percent of Azure AD users have activated MFA (multi-factor authentication) protocols. MFA  would keep their accounts safer and make it significantly more difficult for hackers to force their way in.

Here is how much more difficult it can be:

Google combined forces with researchers at New York University and the University of California to study that very topic. They discovered that MFA implementation can block up to 100 percent of automated bot attacks, 99 percent of bulk phishing attacks, and up to 66 percent of targeted attacks. That is an impressive level of protection for something that's so simple to implement and make use of!

The two big takeaways here are:

  1. The total number of hacking attacks is increasing dramatically.
  2. Although automated tools are getting progressively better at preventing many of them, end users have an important role to play too. Unfortunately, as of right now they're not.

Depressingly few users are taking even the most basic steps to better secure their accounts.  If you set one major IT security goal for the year, a very good one would be to do all you can to increase the percent of users at your firm who are taking advantage of MFA everywhere they can.

More Scammers Are Using Social Media To Target Victims

An increasing number of scammers are using social media to target victims and relying on social engineering tricks to convince people to part with their personal information or money.  The problem has grown serious enough that the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) has issued a formal warning to consumers.

According to a recently released FTC report:

"More than 95,000 people reported about $770 million in losses to fraud initiated on social media platforms in 2021.

Those losses account for about 25 percent of all reported losses to fraud in 2021 and represent a stunning eighteen-fold increase over 2017 reported losses. Reports are up for every age group, but people 18 to 39 were more than twice as likely as older adults to report losing money to these scams in 2021.

More than half of people who reported losses to investment scams in 2021 said the scam started on social media. Reports to the FTC show scammers use social media platforms to promote bogus investment opportunities and even to connect with people directly as supposed friends to encourage them to invest.

People send money, often cryptocurrency, on promises of huge returns, but end up empty-handed."

Overall cryptocurrency scams are regarded as the number one threat for investors in 2022, according to a new report from the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA). However, the FTC is cautioning all users to exercise caution and develop better habits when scrolling through their favorite social media platform.

They recommend setting limits on who can see your posts, taking advantage of increasingly robust privacy controls, opting out of targeted advertising, and doing more due diligence on any company you plan on doing business with before buying anything from them.

It's good advice in general but it is especially important now given how prevalent social media-based attacks are becoming.

Call SpartanTec, Inc. now if you need the help of IT support specialists to boost your cybersecurity.

Mac Malware Is Becoming A Bigger Threat For Users

In late 2020 a new strain of malware called UpdateAgent appeared and began infecting Mac users.

Initially the strain wasn't all that worrisome.  It stole system information but it was by no means the worst threat on a Mac user's radar.

Since that time, the hackers behind the malicious code have been busy. UpdateAgent has received a few developments, with each one adding a new element of danger to the equation.  As things stand now UpdateAgent should be considered a serious threat to Mac users.

As of its latest iteration, UpdateAgent installs an annoyingly persistent adware strain called Adload. It has gained capabilities that make it easy for UpdateAgent to install other even more threatening and damaging payloads in the future.

Microsoft has been investigating and following the development of UpdateAgent.  The company has discovered that the hackers who created the strain are hosting a wide range of other payloads on Amazon Web Services' S3 and CloudFront services. While these have not yet been tied to UpdateAgent, it's a clear sign of the shape of things to come.

In addition to that, the code is now capable of fetching compressed zip files instead of .dmg files. It has been modified to prevent Gatekeeper from displaying pop-up warnings to users.  It can also inject persistent code inside background processes that are invisible to the user.

Microsoft had this to say about their study of the malware strain:

"UpdateAgent is uniquely characterized by its gradual upgrading of persistence techniques, a key feature that indicates this trojan will likely continue to use more sophisticated techniques in future campaigns.

Like many information-stealers found on other platforms, the malware attempts to infiltrate macOS machines to steal data and it is associated with other types of malicious payloads, increasing the chances of multiple infections on a device."

If UpdateAgent wasn't on your radar before it certainly belongs there now.  It's one to watch  out for in the year ahead.

Call SpartanTec, Inc. now and let our IT support experts help protect your information by setting up the most effective cybersecurity measures.

Apple Released A Fix For Multiple Zero Day Exploits

There's good news for Apple users.

The company has been busy and has recently released security updates that address two Zero-Day vulnerabilities. These are security flaws that could be exploited by hackers to cause no end of trouble to anybody running macOS or iOS.

The first Zero-Day addressed is being tracked as CVE-2022-22587 and is a nasty memory corruption bug that impacts macOS Monterey, iPadOS and iOS.

The second issue the company focused on was a Zero-Day bug in Safari's WebKit and it impacted users running iPadOS and iOS.  Tracked as CVE-2022-22594 this allowed websites to track your browsing activity and user identities in real time.

If you're running an OS version earlier than 15.3 you are vulnerable to both exploits. Note that Apple has found evidence that they are actively being exploited in the wild.  To protect yourself you'll want to update to 15.3 as soon as possible.

These two represent the first Zero-Day bugs that Apple has tackled in 2022 which makes them significant.  It's also proof positive that the company isn't sitting back and resting on its laurels.  They're actively taking the fight to the hackers and addressing security flaws head on and at a rapid clip.

It's very good to see but last year Apple seemed to be chasing an unending stream of Zero-Day flaws.  Here's hoping that this year will see relatively fewer of them. Even if that proves not to be the case, Apple has and continues to demonstrate how seriously they take the security of their user base.

Whatever happens, one thing we can say with certainty is that 2022 is bound to be an interesting year.

Again Kudos to Apple for their rapid response and if you're an Apple user check your OS version to make sure you're protected.

Whether you are using Apple devices or PC,s, you need network security. Contact us today for a complete network security report. It is well worth the time.

E-Mail From Department Of Labor Could Be Phishing Attack

There is a new phishing campaign to keep a watchful eye on according to email security firm INKY. It's a particularly fiendish one.

The attackers have designed an email template that does an admirable job of imitating the look and feel of emails sent from the US Department of Labor.

These are being sent out to recipients asking them to submit bids for an ongoing DOL project with the specifics of the project varying from one email to the next.

The emails are professionally and meticulously arranged. Thanks to some clever spoofing they appear to come from an actual Department of Labor server. Naturally they do not come from the DOL, and there are no ongoing projects that require the Department of Labor to blindly spam out emails seeking bids.

Nonetheless, an unwary recipient could easily be taken in by the scam and click the "Bid" button embedded in the email.  That button is of course masking a malicious link which will take the email recipient to one of the phishing sites controlled by the scammers.

Like the emails themselves, these spoofed sites look completely legitimate. A comparison of the HTML and CSS on the scam sites with the actual Department of Labor reveals that they have identical code behind them which is clear evidence that the scammers scraped those sites and used the code to create their own copies.

What's different is the fact that the scam site includes a pop-up message that is there seemingly to guide the email recipient through the bidding process.  What it's really doing is moving the potential victim closer to giving up his or her Office 365 credentials.

Of interest is that after a victim enters his/her credentials they'll be prompted to enter them a second time.  This is to minimize the risk of the scammers harvesting mis-typed credentials.  They seem to have thought of everything!

There's no good defense against this except for vigilance and mindfulness so please make sure your employees, friends, and neighbors are aware of the ongoing campaign.

Call SpartanTec, Inc. now if you want to protect your information against online threats.

Why Is IT Support Important

Technology is essential for businesses today. Technology plays an important role in every organisation, large or small. Technology is often the biggest investment in a company. You should invest in technology maintenance and IT support.

Professional IT support is needed in this situation. IT failure can have devastating consequences for your business. However, IT support can be used to prevent and resolve problems that arise as well as help with compliance.

Poor IT has been highlighted by the Covid-19 pandemic. Many people found it easy to move to remote work. They already had the plans and technology in place. Others found it almost impossible, and even caused businesses to fail.

This article will discuss just a few reasons professional IT support is so important for your business.

Protection Against Cyber Crime.

While it is the attacks on large companies like Boots and Facebook that are the most talked about, it's been revealed that nearly half of all businesses (46%) as well as 26% of charities have reported having suffered cybersecurity breaches or ransomware attacks within the past 12 months.

This means that 46 percent of the businesses that have suffered from attacks or breaches are now experiencing more issues than in 2020.

You might have some knowledge about cybersecurity and anti-virus software installed on your system. Do you know how to identify and avoid all types of malware and viruses? IT support teams can help protect your IT infrastructure from digital threats. In a world in which cybercrime is increasing, this is even more important.

Innovative Solutions for Tricky Problems

Your company might have systems that you are familiar with. What if it goes wrong? It's not always possible to turn it back on and off again. How long can your system go without you? Will it affect your customers and your business?

Even if your software comes with customer support, it is a good idea to have an IT Support team available. They might be able to solve the problem faster than the support team at your software provider.

An IT support team such as SpartanTec, Inc., can analyze most technical problems and provide highly-skilled solutions.

cybersecurity-1-300x210.jpgData Storage, Management and Security

In May 2018, the new General Data Protection Regulation (the "GDPR") came into effect. This is a significant tightening in data protection regulations.

The biggest change was the increase in the amount that regulators can fine companies for not following the law.

The Bible Society, a charitable organization with an estimated half-million in turnover, was fined $100,000. The organization stored personal data in an insufficiently secure network. The ICO deemed this to be inappropriate remote access and made it accessible through an 'easy-to guess' password.

It's high time that data protection is taken seriously.

IT Support teams are responsible for ensuring that your data is kept safe. They ensure that it is accessible, but only to those who are permitted to see it.

You could be storing sensitive data without the help of an IT professional. Giving access to someone without permissions. This is a serious issue in terms of data protection.

What to Look for in a Great IT Support Team

These tips will help you to build a team that is reliable and capable of delivering results for your business.

Resilience - When you rely on a system, and it goes wrong, you need it fixed quickly. You want a service that offers a guaranteed response time and multiple ways to contact them. You don't want to be unable to contact your provider via email or chat if the internet goes down.

Cost - While cost shouldn't be your number one priority, it will play an important role in your budget. Ask for multiple quotes and meet with the managed IT services provider. We recommend that you visit the provider or have the provider come to you. This will allow you to meet the people who will be looking out for you.

Be sure to verify that all quotes include the same items. You might need to pay more for extra services, such as onsite support, if the price is low. You should also be wary of providers that offer a lot more services than you need.

Knowledge - Ask your provider for information about their qualifications to maintain your systems. Ask about experience and the qualifications of engineers. What are the IT professionals doing to keep their staff current in a constantly changing world?

Flexibility - You should be able to modify your contract easily. Business changes are inevitable. You need an IT support provider who can adapt to your needs. If the service is good, they will not be reluctant to renew your contract.

Your IT systems are critical to your business, so make sure you have the right support. Contact SpartanTec, Inc. now for more information.
